Mahi tell us more about how your business started?
It all started a year ago exactly on Women’s Day. My mom came home from a Women’s Day event with a packet of beads. She told me they made bracelets and she had extra beads. She gave them to me and I made some necklaces and bracelets. While my grandma, mum and I were busy threading beads, an idea occurred to me! What if I could make jewelry and sell it? I thought about this quite hard then I shared this idea with my mom and granny. They thought it was great, together we got more bead supplies and I started making jewelry.
At 9years old where did you find your customers?
I went around my neighborhood and managed to sell quite a lot of jewelry. My jewelry is affordable and ranges from R50 – R300. I then expanded my product to friends and family. My business was going really well then after some time it began to slow down.
As a very young Kidprenuer, how did you solve the problems of slow sales?
I realized that not a lot of people want to buy plastic jewelry. Yes, they wanted to support me because the whole reason I wanted to sell jewelry is my dream is to travel to China to meet a real-life panda bear. I have loved pandas pretty much since I was born. Anyway, plastic jewelry was not trending any more. I had another idea, what if I upgraded my business? To me that sounded like a top plan! I wasted no time I went into action. I moved from plastic jewelry to high quality beads, I’m talking about pure crystals, good quality and looks amazing. It took a while longer to make necklaces and bracelets now because they were more difficult to thread. In the end it was all worth it I made more profit and I was so successful, even better than the last time. I started running out of people to buy from me. I needed it to go to the next level. This idea took a longer time to come up with. It was to go to a market and sell jewelry. I was so excited my mom had a friend that worked at a market and she said we could share a table with her. That weekend my family came to support me at the market. We set up our stock and waited for customers to come by. My moms’ friend was a very successful business women she was attracting so many customers I was sitting there watching her. I waited for hours and not one customer bought anything, eventually I had to go home.
What are some of the lessons you learnt about business?
I learnt from experience that it’s not always going to be easy. You get great days for business and you get hard days. This has taught me that life is not as easy as I think it is.
How do your feel about being a young enspired Kidprenuer?
