It’s often conversed that your imprint is not determined by your size.
Curiosity leads you to want to understand how things work, not just accept them as they are. By understanding how processes work, you are able to optimize them, make them more efficient and productive. Curiosity helps eliminate stress. … Curiosity forces you to learn and allows you to be more positive, no doubt curiosity led Shamika Sookoo to dream big and as she takes on the big world, she ignites her journey to achieve her goals as an aspiring Electrical Engineer.
Shamika broke away from stereotypes that attach youth to certain institutions when it comes to tertiary education, she studied at two institutions, rather unique completing her Diploma in Electrical Engineering at a university and an FET.
Shamika share your journey with us?
They say dynamite comes in small packages but what that really means is that if you dream big, no matter who you are, you can become whatever you are meant to be (or whatever you choose to become). Growing up, I was always curious about how things worked and took a keen interest towards getting involved with my dad’s handy work, in our garage. That spark quickly ignited into my passion for science and engineering. In matric, I was as confused as the next teenager when it came down to choosing a career path and study course. I knew for certain that it was never going to be an office-based career. Call it coincidence or the universe calling my purpose, but my career path chose me and not the other way around.
As a young achiever how can you make a difference to the ordinary life of a youth?
One lesson that really stands out for me, is that while I admire those that go to one tertiary institution and receive their qualification in the required time frame, I also admire those who take other pathways to build a career for themselves. We are all built differently and therefore various institutions exists, offering career pathways of obtaining a qualification or set of skilled training in a field of interest. Awareness on the availability of these subjects still require a lot of attention. My plan as an aspiring entrepreneur is to create awareness of this and to motivate young individuals to take an interest in their skills and further develop them. This will drastically improve the youth unemployment rate by creating more SMME’s which will then further create employment opportunities for others.
Tell us more about your career currently, Electrical Engineering is considered male dominated – How do feel about this?
I am currently completing my in-service training towards my qualification and intend to continue on the path of renewable energy towards electricity while completing my post graduate studies in the near future. I feel that the best way to learn is through experience and thus far my experience has been thrilling. Being in a male dominated field empowered me to stand out and stand up for what is important to me as a woman. I am happy to be supported by amazing mentors and to feel the equality shared at my workplace. I am motivated daily to inspire young ladies to get into careers in STEMS.
Being a millennial has taught me that it is a necessity to have more than one source of income. In 2019, I took up a work opportunity as a consultant during the holidays. I was exposed to business development and management. This enabled me to assist businesses access funding, grasping the concepts with the experience, I opened my own company, Aura Capital Consultancy (Pty) Ltd. (ACC).
ACC provides support to SMME’s in the form of business funding applications, business writing packages digital marketing packages, business strategy consulting, branding guidance packages, social media marketing, brand activations, promotion competitions and much more. We are simply empowered to empower businesses.
What are some of the valuable lessons learnt during covid-19?
If anything, Covid-19 had taught us the importance of having various incomes, skillsets and having a self-sustaining business that feeds an essential need in our country.
I would love to tell every young individual that you should not conform to one way of achieving your dreams. Work through all methods, try and fail and try again. Never give up when you stumble across obstacles, instead always work honestly, and put in that extra effort. You will be successful; you will achieve what you set your mind to achieve. Believe that and there is nothing stopping you.
